The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is an autonomous organization established under the ordinance ACT 1990. BISE Mardan has the power to independently manage its financial and executive affairs. It is responsible for devising, restructuring, reforming, and updating the administrative and financial procedures of all the intermediate and secondary education institutions that are affiliated with it or come under its jurisdiction.

District Mardan, District Swabi and District Nowshera fall under limits and territory of BISE Mardan’s authority. BISE Mardan has responsibility to: “affiliate institutions imparting SSC and HSSC education within Pakistan and abroad, prescribe courses of instructions for SSC and HSSC, ensure provision of requisite facilities in the affiliated institutions, hold exams, appoint examiners and supervisory staff and Institute measures to promote physical well being of students”.

The Ministry of Education Pakistan has ardent responsibility to control and manage education system in Mardan, where only half million children are enrolled in schools. Mardan is second most populous city of KPK after Peshawar. Out of total population of Mardan District, 36% of its population is under age of 5-16 years.

The Mardan District currently has around 1,995 schools, with 1,009 schools catering to boys and 906 schools catering to girls. These schools provide a total of 8,100 classrooms. However, considering the growing population of the district, these schools may not be sufficient to meet the educational needs of the region. According to the survey conducted by the HUMQADAM INITIATIVE, the average literacy rate for primary education, known as the Gross Enrolment Rate (GER), is recorded at 72% at the primary level and 42% at the secondary level. These figures indicate the percentage of children enrolled in schools at each level. It highlights the need to focus on improving access to education and increasing enrollment rates, especially at the secondary level, to ensure a higher literacy rate in the district.

Gender in-equality in education and lack of sufficient educational facilities is also a problem in Mardan city and its premises. The need to take adequate measure to rule out illiteracy from populous areas like Mardan is of great importance. The KPK government and BISE Mardan has took many steps to develop education system in the district as well as increase enrollments of students in primary and secondary level.
